Bicycles and Coal. In the Beijing hutongs (ancient downtown neighbourhoods) these two items plainly tell one side of the story of China's developing economy. For many the main source of home heating and cooking is still heavily polluting coal and the main mode of transport is the more environmentally friendly bicycle. But both are practical and cheap.
