Lakestone > The modern Egyptian city of Luxor was originally called Thebes and was the capital of the Pharaonic empire for over a thousand years. The great Temple of Karnak is situated by the Nile River in Luxor and is the largest of the ancient Egyptian temples. The Temple of Luxor is another great temple directly to the south of Karnak and only a mile or two away. At one time a row of hundreds of large ram-headed sphinxes lined both sides of a roadway connecting the two great temples. Above is pictured a set of these sphinxes assembled wihtin Karnak.
